*ThiswayThatway, *dandified performance artist* from Oakland, CA
ThiswayThatway (aka Cecilio Cooper) is a dandified performance artist who enjoys the messy collision of glitter and theory. They explore blackness, sexuality, and gender through video, textiles, and drag/neo-burlesque traditions. Based in Oakland, ThiswayThatway has wreaked havoc on stages across North America, including: Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (SF), 9:30 Club (DC), Hippodrome (PDX), Emo’s (AUS), The Metro (CHI), and Toronto Pride (CAN). thisway-thatway.com

*Amanda Cheong, Brooklyn, NY / Sydney, AUS
Amanda Cheong comes from the land down under, where the women glow and
the men plunder. Currently an alien based in New York, this she-stache
wielding ghey has taken a break from riding kangaroos and hanging out
with Koalas to bring some aussie performance to your shores. Joining
the Sydney queer performance scene in 2007, Amanda brought politics to
the stage with her weird and quirky shows. Disgusting, astounding and
humoring audiences till they screamed for more.

Queer Book Worm Parties

So it’s 7PM on the second Thursday of the month, which means I’m at Re/Dress and since all the go-backs and tagging are done and all the custies are happy* I am sitting here daydreaming about my make-up and hair for Rebel Cupcake tonight. Every second Thursday I leave the store at 8 and have exactly an hour and fifteen minutes to get home, walk Macy, do my hair and make-up and do any last-minute Rebel Cupcake thingies.

AMO1

This ritual has lasted for a year now, I am so happy and thankful to get to keep producing this party, that this party is so genuine/fun/not sceney/feel-good/flamboyant/queer/body-positive, to have work that is flexible enough that accommodates me doing all the different gigs I do.

I don’t usually perform in addition to Femmeceeing and producing the event but since it’s the anniversary party I’m doing my Lesbolesque act. Which means I’m also mentally rehearsing my act, a ritual that is as old as my drag king days. Did you know I used to perform as a drag king? That was really where I found myself a decade or so ago, on the drag king stage.

Also coming up within the week are two parties I’m excited to have a hand in. Total queer book worm parties.

Persistence: All Ways Butch and Femme, the anthology just released from Arsenal Pulp Press, is doing it’s NYC launch and it’s not just a reading! There will be music performed by the amazing Rae Spoon. Rae is Canadian. Rae was featured on FemmeCast. Rae is my friend-in-law and beloved by many of my favorite people.

Also, Ivan E. Coyote! Such a heart-string pulling story-teller! Author extraordinaire! Canadian! Have you watched the video To All The Kick-Ass Beautiful Fierce Femmes Out There? Watch it and cry a little.

184254_10150149566545726_235357940725_8448881_4080456_n
Ivan!

Also, Zena Sharman! So smart, sassy and funny. And a (you guessed it) Canadian!! There is so much maple at this event I just cannot wait.

IMG_7315.JPG
A few of my favorite things, Canadians, BBQ and making foolish faces. Zena on the left, hotties Ashley Aron and Smith on the right.

And also me! Reading a story that is a cousin to what I have in the book because I want to give people an incentive to buy the book to read more about debunking the femmephobic notion that Femmes are high maintenance. My friend who is a women and gender studies professor told me it’s a “highly quotable piece” and will be required reading for future classes he teaches so I feel super excited about making contributions to academia (even though in my opinion the book is so much more colloquial than academic).

To cap off the readings/music/book launch a queer book worm DANCE PARTY!

When I was a little kid I was so shy and awkward and hardcore bullied for being fat so I just stuck to myself during recess, standing alone reading books. Literally standing in the playground, Baby Sitters Club or Nancy Drew or Christopher Pike in hand. So now all of this queer book worm dance party action, marrying my love of books and dancing is really like this amazing full-circle situation.**

IMG_7813.JPG
DJ Polar Sounds, hot butch magic times on the decks until 2 AM!

Not to be outdone, next Friday, May 20th is the Feminist Press (swoon, right?) dance party fundraiser FASTER PUSSYCAT!***

FP_116

The raffle is a fat girl’s dream–a gift certificate to Domino Dollhouse and a Re/Dress gift certificate are both up for grabs!

The party is at that 116 space I talked about in my last entry!

It’s queer summer, the book worms are using party fliers as bookmarks, and hitting the dance floor!

*Hey Deb!
**What would I put on a bookmark if I were able to slip it into ten-year-old tiny fat Bevin’s beloved books? “It’s all going to be okay.” A photo of a cute faggy gender queer with an age-appropriate explanation of queer sexuality. (I didn’t even know that people could be lesbians until I was 14, how’s that for in the closet?) Or maybe not because maybe it was easier just being fat, and better to be ignorant of being queer for awhile? Maybe just a photo of me at 32 having so much fun and loving life?
***We watched that movie in my feminist filmmaking class in undergrad. Love it!

NYC April 14! Queer Performance and Dance Party Rebel Cupcake 12: I Love Lucy

Rebel Cupcake 12: I Love Lucy

Booking for a monthly show is so heartwarming. I get to share some of my favorite artists with my crowd and create a special alchemy of performances to fit certain themes and, always, leave the audience feeling good and ready to dance, mingle and let their lights shine. Sometimes I day dream about who I would have at a show if I had a big budget and could fly someone in every month.

Serendipity often has a hand in determining the line-up for my show, and this month’s Rebel Cupcake she really came through. Not one but two of my favorite out of town beauties are in town for Rebel Cupcake–I hope if you are near NYC you’ll come out!

The photo booth is black and white in honor of the I Love Lucy theme. Optional dress code is to serve Ricky, Lucy, Ethel or Fred. Save $2 off the door by signing up for our texty texty list (promise no spam).

191471_10150119204949386_512354385_6103431_645083_o

Miasia is one of my favorite people in this world and she also happens to be a world-famous belly dancer. She lives in Washington, DC so I don’t get to see her very often, but luckily she happens to be in town and will be gracing the stage of Rebel Cupcake once more!

133214_473749469385_512354385_5385036_7878502_o

“Miasia is an extraordinary dancer. Of all the thousands of women I
have taught, she is the best of the best. Her stage presence is
intoxicating and her joy is infectious. Miasia’s technique is flawless,
but a true artist must be more than that. A master technician must be
warm and engaging. Miasia is what I call a heart, gut, soul dancer.–Artemis Mourat”

135542_473750474385_512354385_5385055_7569793_o

Miss Mary Wanna was introduced to me on a blind performer date for the Zombie Queer Cabaret I did in October 2009 and I am so grateful for the introduction! She has a one-of-a-kind shimmy and real comedic presence. She is going to go far in burlesque.

171042_491272714385_512354385_5672378_5335038_o

This sassy southern creature of the night has been knocking over trash cans, causing hiiiigh-jinx along the east coast, and has once again found her way to the magical streets of New York City. She currently builds her den in Philadelphia, bumpin and grindin in the name of brotherly and sisterly love with other DIY queens and kings alike. Whether she’s peeling away fur or feathers, Miss Mary Wanna is certain to blow your mind and get you high!

What can I say about Glenn Marla that I haven’t already said sixteen times? His tag on my blog is one of the most often-used (almost as much as Femme, Community, and Dating!) because he is brilliant. I am lucky to have him in my life, to call him my friend, and have named one of the peacock feathers in my new tattoo after him. He is a world-class performance artist and does some extraordinary work. Since this night is all about 50s showbiz, I requested his act “Put a Little Mascara On.” You’ll love it.

IMG_7764.JPG

The Portland Phoenix calls Glenn Marla’s work, “performance art that pushes the envelope without pushing the audience away,” Time Out New York Calls Glenn a “downtown prophet” and The New York Times calls Glenn “an obese transvestite in tights.”

Fancy Feast comes to us from right here in New York City. She’s a fresh bottom and Rebel Cupcake regulars will recognize her as my trusty stage kitten. She’s under the hot lights this month ready to do some comedic burlesque in the style of Lucy hi-jinks!

171454_491270884385_512354385_5672329_1040608_o

When she first started stage kittening for me her name was Boob Radley and I was really hoping for an act involving her dressed as a ham.

As always, free cupcakes while they last! Vegan & gluten free sometimes available.

Accessibility notes: The stage area and bar are wheelchair accessible. Coming into the venue is a little narrow but there are no stairs to enter. Lots of street parking available. (Please let me know if you need any accommodations!)

FemmeCast Wants Advertisers!!

Hey there cherished blog readers and audio adventurers! I know there’s some crossover between folks who listen to FemmeCast: The Queer Fat Femme Podcast Guide to Life, which I host and produce, and folks who read my blog, so here is an announcement for all of you!

FemmeCast Logo

Together with my strategizing friends, I have been developing a plan to make it easier and faster to produce more and better FemmeCasts. But what I need to make it happen is a little money. Since the inception of the podcast almost two years ago, I have paid for everything for FemmeCast out of my own pocket and with personal favors*, from the equipment to the hosting to the production. A lot of people have given a lot of time to make it happen.

FemmeCast has always been free and will remain free.

What I am looking for are some queer-friendly advertisers who want to get a message out to an average of 1,500 listeners within the first month. Each episode lives on in perpetuity which provides further longevity. I want the ads to be relevant to the podcast and interesting, and I will work with the advertiser to make that happen. The rates are really accessible, $100-$150 per episode (depending on length of ad).

So if you know of a business, a start up, an entity or anything that seems like it would be a good fit to advertise on FemmeCast, please put them in touch with me! femmecast at gmail.com

*And some equipment I only have because of personal favors.
